Pay TV reached an extensive audience, providing coverage to an impressive 37.6 million households in Russia
The Russian market for cable and satellite TV continues to hold the top position as the largest in Europe
According to a study conducted by J’son & Partners Consulting, the Russian pay TV market maintains its position as the largest in Europe. As of the end of 2014, it encompassed an impressive 37.6 million households connected through cable, satellite, and IPTV technologies.
For comparison, Digital TV Research Ltd reports that the German pay TV subscriber base consists of 22.8 million households, while the UK boasts 16.1 million households. Experts predict continuous growth in the Russian pay TV market, projecting an increase to 45.2 million households by 2019. This expansion is expected to result in a pay TV service penetration rate of 81%.
By the end of 2014, the pay TV market in Russia reached a substantial volume of 66.5 billion rubles. The largest segment within the market was cable television, accounting for 32.5 billion rubles in revenues. Satellite broadcast services generated revenues of 22.5 billion rubles, while IPTV operators contributed around 11.4 billion rubles. The segments of satellite TV and IPTV had the highest number of connections.
Key players in the Russian pay TV market at the end of 2014 included “Tricolor TV” with a market share of 29%, followed by “Rostelecom” (21%), MTS (7%), “ER-Telecom” (7%), and “Orion Express” (7%). More than half of the subscriber base was concentrated in the Volga (Privolzhsky) and Central Federal Districts. In terms of the number of pay TV subscribers, the Central Federal District took the lead with 34% of the entire Russian market.
